We’re also always on the lookout for specific kinds of tapes: old television broadcasts, home movies of events or locations of interest, and local news recordings. Example pricing: A standard tape (up to about 2 hours) typically runs $20–$25 to convert. Longer or extended-play tapes are priced individually. And if there’s only a short stretch worth saving, say ten minutes of usable footage on an otherwise blank tape, the price reflects that, not the full-tape rate.

Preserving VHS recordings keeps that footage from disappearing for good. Tape degrades: studies put the loss at roughly 10 to 20 percent of quality over 10 to 25 years, even under decent storage conditions. Mold is another common threat, and it can damage both the tape and the VCR used to play it. Once a tape is gone, it’s gone.
